What do you hate to see most when you read a fic? Personally, I hate seeing an obvious lack of use of spell check and a good beta reader because I can't stand to see mistakes spread throughout the story. It makes reading more difficult because I always correct the mistakes I see in my head. I suppose the plus side is that the story's potential for mocking goes up quite a bit.

Yes, I totally agree with the whole spell check thing. I cannot stand people don't use spell check. It drives me absolutely nuts! When I read stories with bad grammar and spelling I think to myself: What were these people thinking when they posted this? Did they even read it over once? I must say though that when you reread your own story you usually overlook your own mistakes. I do that all the time. But that's why you get a beta or in my case I just reread it a hundred times. Heh. Another thing I can't stand: Bad formatting. When everything is just one big block or there aren't lines between people talking. Sometimes if I see a story like that I won't read it because it is usually so hard to follow. Oh, dear. I seem to have gone into rant mode. Sorry. Heh. I just like stories where it is obvious that the person has put a lot of time into it.

Exactly. Betas are helpful, as long as you find one who can actually recognize the mistakes and fix them, of course.
Oh, god, I hate block formatting as well. I know sometimes ff.net screws up, but keep trying to fix it! It's ridiculously hard to try to read just one or two big paragraphs.
Another thing I hate, regarding the amount of time authors spend on their stories, is when one part of the story is maybe 300 words. I just don't understand how that can be considered long or developed enough for one part.
Hee, rant mode is great. I love ranting. Pent-up frustration is overrated.

Oh, yes. Again, very true. Chapters that are only like 300 words drive me nuts too. There is this one story that I keep noticing on FF.Net. I only read the first couple chapters and it seemed pretty good. And I'm not trying to insult her or anything but the story is 18 chapters and only a little over 9000 words. The chapters are very very short.

My ranting's up now:
Bad grammar and spelling, too short chapters, block formatting, when people write in shorts (4, 2, u...), and other goodies. Not goodies actually. Anyway, when it comes to the actual story, I absolutely hate it when people write OOC without any reason or acknowledgement. And hey, I'm all for fluff, but not when it comes as a long story, and fluff is everything basically. I write fics, though I haven't published any in a big forum actually--but nonetheless, I think and reread a hunderd of times before even sending it to my beta. I really hate it when people just send a fic out there without rereading, without thinking twice. FF.net, for an example, is after all, a good archive--lots and lots of everything. But sometimes I just cannot stand reading half of the stories there....it sucks.
Wow. Oops. Came out too demanding and long, didn't it?

I hate it in stories when there is bad grammar, way too short of chapters and when people don't capitalize correctly (ex- i instead of I or tristan instead of Tristan) I also hate when people use internet lingo in their stories. It irks me! Bye;) Christina
